I didn't think tennis was the career for me until quite late.
In late 1999, when I was 17, I wasn't doing that well in the juniors and I was ready to go to college. My coach at the time, Tarik Benhabiles, said to me: " Give me four months, leave it until spring before you go to school. " And after working with him for four months, I was the number one junior in the world, so I thought I might go professional. I was quite quick out of the gates during my first year as a pro. I went from being a junior one year to becoming the world number 14 the next. It was pretty quick. I didn't struggle in the Future or Challenger tournaments, I just moved on up. Tarik and I will always be friend. He's been a huge influence on my life, not only on the tennis court but off it too. I think I would still be in college if it wasn't for him so I owe a lot of my success to him.
