Strong singles performances under pressure yesterday earned
Dutch pair Peter Wessels and Michaella Krajicek a place in the eight-nation
field for this year's Hyundai Hopman Cup.
The Netherlands beat Zimbabwe 2 - 1 in the Play-off after a tense
four-hour singles battle, with Krajicek coming from behind to beat
Cara Black 3-6, 7-6, 6-0, with the tie-breaker going 7-5.
The experienced Black was serving for the match at 6-5 in the second
set when her 15-year-old rival suddenly pressed the fightback button.
Krajicek broke to save the match, won the tie-breaker and then got
completely on top, not conceding another game.
Wessels, mindful of the fact that his opponents are raked No. 3
in world doubles, won the first set in a tie-breaker, with the points
going 9-7 and then clinched the match with a 7-5 second set......

An ankle injury to Italy's Davide Sanguinetti caused
a scare in the men's singles battle with Argentina's Guillermo
Coria yesterday, but in the final outcome it didn't affect
the result of the opening round-robin fixture.
The 4th seeded Argentinians survived in the mixed doubles
after Italy's Francesca Schiavone has opened up with a 6-1,
6-3 win over rising young star Gisela Dulko. The match was
levelled when Coria beated Sanguinetti 6-1, 7-6(4) after the
Italian looked doomed when he rolled his ankle two games into
the first set.
He showed great courage to battle on and, in fact, broke the
service of Coria in the second set, only to concede his own
serve, forcing the tie-breaker. The decider saw the Argentine
pair playing mixed doubles for the first time and it was a
much more composed Dulko who held her own against the aggressive
Italians. Argentina now faces top seeds Russia on Wednesday
morning, with Italy set for a chance to rebound against Germany
in Session 6 on Tuesday night......Day

the way the crowds get behind me. "
