THE Slovak Republic won its way
into a second successive Hyundai Hopman Cup Final at the Burswood
Dome yesterday.
The team was well on the way to victory when injury intervened
as Dutchman Peter Wessels was forced to retire with a chest
muscle strain. The default came after Daniela Hantuchova had
beaten young star Michaella Krajicek 6-4, 6-2 and Dominik
Hrbaty was leading 5-2 in the singles clash with Wessels.
" I've been really pleased with my singles and
I feel much more confident, " Hantuchova said
after the win " I'm enjoying every day here and
feel totally different to last year, not only as a player,
but a person too. "
Perth fans found a new Aussie hero as substitute Paul Baccanello
produced some gusty tennis after flying in from Adelaide to
replace the injured Mark Philippoussis. While it was a match
that couldn't help Australia's cause, he played strongly before
losing 6-3, 6-4 to James Blake and was impressive in his partnership
with Alicia Molik even though they lost the doubles. Earlier,
Molik continued her unbeaten run with a 6-2, 6-3 win over
Meghann Shaughnessy. Day
