| Thassha, Nudnida advance in PTT Bangkok Open |
BANGKOK Thailand, August 01, 2006
Fifth-seeded Thassha Vitayaviroj (WTA-671) of Thailand won her first match after suffering first round exit in week 1 and week 2, defeating Asha Nandakumar of India in straight sets 7-6(1), 6-0 in the $US10,000 PTT Bangkok Open circuit 3 at the Tennis Academy of Asia in Bangkok, Thailand.
Last week circuit 2 semi-finalists and top seed Nudnida Luangnam (WTA-408) joined Thassha in the second round. The Thai had no problems handling Japan's Yuka Kuroda 6-1, 6-0. Unfortunate two other Thais hope were sent packing in the first round. Wilawan Choptang (WTA-661) was defeated by qualifier Cassandra Chan of Australia in three sets battle 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 while wildcard entrant Nicha Lertpitaksinchai (ITF-180) went down to Indonesia's Vivien Silfany-Tony in straight sets 6-3, 6-3......... Thailand's No. 1 Tamarine Tanasugarn (WTA-123) progressed to the women's singles second round of the $US750,000 Legg Mason Women's Pro Circuit at William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center in Washington D.C., USA on Tuesday.
Tammy advanced to the second round with a victory 6-2, 2-0 lead when opponent Shikha Uberoi of India retired in the second set due to heat. The Thai sets up second round clash against Su-Wei Hsieh of Taipei who recorded 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over British's Sarah Borwell. Unfortunate the other Thai hope, Napaporn Tongsalee (WTA-229) who received a lucky loser into the main draw, went down 6-1, 6-0 to fifth-seeded Nicole Pratt of Australia.
In the $US600,000 Legg Mason Tennis Classic, No. 9th seed Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand wasted two match points against Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark. The Thai went down 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-3 in the men's singles second round..........More

Wildcard entrant Varatchaya Wongteanchai (ITF-86) of Thailand scored a 6-1, 7-6(3) win over last week circuit 2 champion Vlada Ekshibarova of Uzbekistan, to advance to the women's singles second round in the $US10,000 PTT Bangkok Open circuit 3 at the Tennis Academy of Asia in Bangkok, Thailand earlier today.
Varatchaya, 16-year-old from Chiangrai, played consistently to win the first set 6-1. In the second set, the Uzbek girl fought back to take a lead at 6-5. The Thai called the trainer to receive treatment for an injured thigh when she was down at the fifth set point on the twelfth game. She saved five set points before prevaling 7-6(3), claiming the tie-break seven points to three. Varatchaya next play seventh-seeded Pichittra Thongdach (WTA-659) who eased past last week circuit 2 finalists Nungnadda Wannasuk (WTA-689) in the other first round. Pichittra was leading 3-1 against Nungnadda before her compatriot was forced to retire from the match due to a wrist injury.
The other successful Thais today were qualifier Varanya Vijuksanaboon and Daowadueng Phonkan. Varanya defeated another qualifier Yu-Ting Lin of Taipei in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 while Daowadueng Phonkan upset fourth-seeded Parul Goswami of India 6-4, 6-1....... More

Thailand's 16-year-old world junior No. 86, Varatchaya Wongteanchai , made her tournament debut on the ITF women's circuit by reaching the women's singles quarter-finals at the Tennis Academy of Asia in the $US10,000 PTT Bangkok Open circuit 3 earlier today.
Varatchaya, a Chiangrai native, rallied from a set down to defeat her senior compatriot and seventh-seeded Pichittra Thongdach (WTA-659) in three gruelling sets 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 which lasted 2 hours and 28 minutes. She will next play Jin-A Lee of Korea (WTA-789) for a spot in the semi-finals. Fifth-seeded Thassha Vitayaviroj (WTA-671) was given a scare by Hong Kong's junior Zi-Jun Yang before winning in three sets. Thailand's No. 1 Tamarine Tanasugarn (WTA-123) stormed into the women's singles quarter-finals after defeating Su-Wei Hsieh of Taipei in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of the $US750,000 Legg Mason Women's Pro Circuit at William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center in Washington D.C., USA on Thursday.
Tammy and Su-Wei Hsieh had previously played twice with the Thai leads 2-0 in their head to head meetings. The Thai won the latest in qualifying first round at WTA Birmingham in June 2006. Tammy next play third-seeded Camille Pin of France who scored a 6-0. 7-6(3) win over USA's Carly Gullickson, for a place in the semi-finals.
In doubles quarter-finals, the Thai-British pair of Napaporn Tongsalee and Sarah Borwell went down 6-4, 6-4 to second seed pair of Taiwan's Su-Wei Hsieh and Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus..........More

Top seed Nudnida Luangnam (WTA-408) of Thailand scored a 6-4, 7-6(5) win over compatriot and fifth-seeded Thassha Vitayaviroj (WTA-671) to reach the women's singles semi-finals at the Tennis Academy of Asia in the $US10,000 PTT Bangkok Open circuit 3 earlier today.
The Thai 19-year-old from Sukhothai sets up semi-finals clash with Korea's Jin-A Lee who recorded a 6-2, 6-0 victory over wildcard entrant Varatchaya Wongteanchai (ITF-86), for a spot in the finals.
16-year-old world junior No. 86, Varatchaya, has been training exclusively "The Rising Stars Programme" under the LTAT (Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand) since April 2006. The Chiangrai native made her tournament debut on the ITF women's circuit by reaching the women's singles second round in leg 2 and quarter-finals in leg 3 of the $US10,000 PTT Bangkok Open. Her run of success came to an end today as she was beaten in the quarter-finals. As the quarter-finalists of the $US10,000 PTT Bangkok Open leg 3, Varatchaya will receive another 1.5 WTA computor ranking points and, together with one point she had already earned by reaching the second round in leg 2. Second seed Pichittra Thongdach of Thailand and Jin-A Lee of Korea had a successful campaign to claim the doubles title in the $US10,000 PTT Bangkok Open circuit 3 at the Tennis Academy of Asia earlier today.
The Thai - Korea duo defeated wildcard entrant pair of Uthumporn Pudtra of Thailand and Hong Kong's Zi-Jun Yang in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to capture their ITF women's circuit doubles title.
In singles semi-finals, top seeded Nudnida Luangnam (WTA-408) of Thailand failed to make the singles final, losing to Korea's Jin-A Lee in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. Thailand's 19-year-old Weerapat Doakmaiklee (ATP-965) has suffered an early first round exit after the first round matches were finished on day one in the $US15,000 PTT-LTAT Bangkok Open F4 at the Rama Gardens Hotel Tennis Courts in Bangkok earlier today.
Weerapat, who reached his career-best in world junior at No. 44th in January 2005, went down in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to seventh-seeded Jae-Sung An of Korea. The other Thai, who could not make it past the first round, was wildcard entrant Pattrayu Chumpet. The Thai 15-year-old was defeated by top seed Ti Chen of Taiwan 6-0, 6-1.
In the qualifying, 15-year-old Sorachet Uayporn and Putporn Chantawannop were the only two out of eight players from Thailand to progress to the main draw after the final qualifying matches were finished yesterday. Asian singles No. 1 Paradorn Srichaphan (ATP-47) of Thailand progressed to the men's singles second round at the $US2,450,000 Rogers Cup Tennis Masters, defeating Gilles Simon of France in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 at the Rexall Tennis Center in Toronto, Canada on Monday.
The Thai 27-year-old next play either sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia or Belgium Xavier Malisse, for a place in the third round.
