| Germans
show why they are favorites ... |
PERTH,
Australia January 01, 2006

The unseeded German pair of Nicolas Kiefer and Anna-Lena
Groenefeld showed why the sporting bookmakers installed them
favorites for the Hyundai Hopman Cup when they scrambled their
way to victory against Australia yesterday.
The new Aussie combination of Samantha Stosur and Wayne Arthurs
looked capable of victory after the singles rubbers were split,
given their doubles prowess. But the Germans showed great
resilience to claim the Match Tie-break 10 points to 8, to
decide the mixed, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6.
The 20-year-old Groenefeld, who has risen to a ranking of
21 and her experienced partner showed great composure to outlast
the Aussies after dropping the first set.
Germany has been installed as Cup favorites at $3.25 on the
withdrawal of Marat Safin from the top seeds Russia and yesterday's
match now sets up a great duel between second seeds Argentina
and Germany on Wednesday morning.
Earlier, the singles had been split, with Stosur giving Australia
the first rubber, but Kiefer levelling the Tie.

| USA
pair look good in double |

Australia January 02, 2006

Big-serving American son of an Aussie great in Taylor
Dent showed good form in his opening two matches as the United
States of America beat Cup newcomers Serbia & Montenegro
2 -1 in yesterday's round-robin series.
Dent was all-powerful in his 56-minute singles win over 18-year-old
Novak Djokovic, 6-1, 6-4 and then partnered renowned doubles
champion Lisa Raymond to a 7-6(7/3), 6-2 win in the mixed.
Dent, who freely admits that his game defends on his service,
was in a controlled mood as he continually won points after
getting his first service into play. He also kept his unforced
errors to a minimum, conceding just 12 to Djokovic's 25.
The match opened promisingly for Serbia's rising young star
Ana Ivanovic, who beat Raymond 6-2, 6-4 despite a nervous
falter as she twice dropped service when serving for the match.
The 18-year-old looked impressive with a range of smooth-flowing
ground strokes.

| Dutch
giant-killers on the march |
PERTH,
Australia January 03, 2006

There are a couple of precedents for Dutch Play-Off
winners Michaella Krajicek and Peter Wessels as they chase
a possible berth in Friday's Final of this year's Hyundai
Hopman Cup.
Previuos Cup winners the Slovak Republic (10th) and runner's
up Thailand (12th) both emerged from the Play-Off, so there
is plenty of incentive for the Netherlands to keep advancing.
Their stunning 2 - 1 win over second seeds Argentina was sealed
with dramatic singles victories by Krajicek and Wessels as
Gisela Dulko and Gaston Gaudio struggled to find any rhythm.
The 16-year-old Krajicek was particularly impressive, keeping
her errors to a minimum, with 25 compared to Dulko's 39. However,
it was the singles performance of Wessels that caught the
attention. Ranked 135 places below world No. 10 Gaudio, he
gave his opponent little chance to settle on his Cup debut
and won 6-2, 7-6(7/5), claiming the tie-break seven points
to five.....with his fourth match point.

| Dutch
continue their roll |
PERTH,
Australia January 04, 2006

The surprise packet of this year's Cup in the Netherlands
did it again last night, beating Australia 2 - 1 to stay on
track for a place in Friday night's Final.
Peter Wessels and Michaella Krajicek clinched the Tie with
a mixed doubles win, 6-4, 6-2 after the singles rubbers had
been split.
The loss by Australia's replacement player Todd Reid and the
much-improved Samantha Stosur puts the host nation out of
contention for a place in the Final.
Wessels won his singles clash with Todd Reid 7-5, 6-4 and
it was purely down to his excellent serving that left him
in front. At one stage he was achieving around 85% of his
services into play.
Earlier, Stosur had snatched a tight win over Krajicek after
an intense second set fluctuated both ways, especially in
the tie-break decider. Stosur had to save two set points as
Krajicek was troubled with double faults, notching 10 for
the match to offset her 12 aces. But likewise, the Aussie
needed two match points before clinching the tie-breaker 10
points to eight.

| Russia
back in the final equation |
PERTH,
Australia January 05, 2006

Russia, who lost favour with the withdrawal of Marat
Safin, rebounded into Cup Final contention with a surprise
win over Sweden, clinched with a gusty mixed doubles. With
Yuri Schukin belying his ranking of 299 and Grand Slam singles
and doubles champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in good form, they
won 6-3, 7-5 as the clock approached midnight.
While Kuznetsova admitted she was 'scratchy', it was good
enough to beat Arvidsson, 7-6, 6-4. The Russian winner of
last year's US Open served eight aces and won seven of the
12 break points she held, whereas Arvidsson had the one ace
and clinched only six of her 18 break points.
Johansson had to work overtime to quell the enthusiastic Schukin
, who forced the 13th ranked Swede to two tie-breakers, winning
the first 9 - 7 and the second 7 - 4. Ranked 286 places lower,
Schukin was far from daunted and only 19 aces from Johansson
(compared to one) told the tale.
